The three Texas Shire Houses at Mirador share a lot: round doors, earth-covered roofs, handcrafted interiors and the same quiet stretch of ranch land near Mingus, Texas. But they aren't interchangeable. One sleeps an extra guest, the kitchens differ in small ways, and each house has its own personality.
If you've already decided on a stay in the Texas Shire and are just trying to pick a door, this guide is for you.

What every house includes
Whichever door you choose, you'll find:
- A queen bed and built-in bunk beds, plus one bathroom.
- Starlink Wi-Fi. It's there when you need it, though most guests come here to unplug for a while.
- Air conditioning and heating.
- A kitchenette with a stovetop, microwave, air fryer, sink and fridge. That's what Mirador's FAQ lists for every house. The Baker and Writer also have ovens; the Gardener has no working oven.
- Free on-site parking, with arrival instructions sent before your stay.
- Check-in at 3 p.m. and checkout at 11 a.m., according to the current booking listings.
A few rules apply to all three houses: a two-night minimum stay, no pets (service animals excepted), and no smoking or vaping indoors.
Dining options nearby are limited, so plan to bring groceries. Your kitchenette will get more use than you might expect.
The Baker House: the yellow door, and room for five
The Baker is the only Texas Shire House that sleeps five. Along with the queen bed and built-in bunks, it has a sleeping nook, which makes the difference for a family of five or a group of four that wants a little more room to spread out.
Its listing describes rustic stone walls, warm wood beams and cozy sleeping nooks. The Baker also has an oven, which helps if you're planning a simple baked breakfast or reheating a dinner you brought from home.
Choose the Baker if: you're a family of five, you're traveling with young kids who'll love having their own nook, or you want the most sleeping space in one house.

The Gardener House: the green door and a garden outside
The Gardener sits beneath a living roof, and its listing describes a private garden with rolling countryside beyond. Inside, you'll find timber beams, stonework, vintage pieces and a fireside living space. It sleeps up to four, with a queen bed and built-in bunks.
The one practical difference: the Gardener does not have a working oven. You'll still have a kitchenette with a stovetop, microwave, air fryer, sink and fridge, which is plenty for most short stays. If oven cooking is central to your plans, though, consider the Baker or Writer.
Choose the Gardener if: you're drawn to the garden setting, you're a couple or a family of four, and simple stovetop meals suit you.

The Writer House: the blue door, for slow mornings
The Writer is entered through a round blue door into rooms of hand-carved wood and storybook details. Like the Gardener, it sleeps up to four with a queen bed and built-in bunks, and like the Baker, it has an oven.
Its character suits a slower pace: a book by the window, coffee that turns into a second cup, an evening with nowhere else to be.
Choose the Writer if: you're a couple who wants a quiet retreat, a family of four, or someone who'd like a cozy place to read or write for a couple of days.

Choosing by situation
Traveling as a family of five? The Baker is your only single-house option. See how a family of five fits in the Baker House.
Two couples traveling together? Each house has one queen bed and a set of bunks, so two adult couples will usually be more comfortable in two houses than sharing one. The three houses sit on the same property, which makes booking side-by-side houses an easy way to travel together.
A larger group or a celebration? Consider booking more than one house. For private events, weddings and photo or content shoots, contact Mirador first. These require separate approval and may have different rates.
Just the two of you? Any of the three will work. Choose by the dates you want and the house that appeals to you most. Then browse the add-ons, such as a wine tasting, pond picnic or hosted sunset drive. Add-ons are requested separately and confirmed by the Mirador team; they aren't included in the nightly rate.
Flexible on dates? Open dates vary from house to house, so if your first choice is taken, check the other two. Weekday arrivals often have more openings than weekends. Our midweek getaway guide covers how to plan a stay outside the usual Friday-to-Sunday window.
Before you book
- Look at the full total, not just the nightly rate. The booking engine shows the complete price for your dates, including the cleaning fee and guest service fee.
- Read the payment and cancellation terms on the listing before confirming.
- Check the guest count. The Writer and Gardener allow up to four registered guests and the Baker up to five, including children.
