A stay in a storybook house goes best when the practical things are handled before you arrive. That means groceries in the car, add-ons requested ahead of time and the directions saved. Here's what to know and what to bring for your stay in Mirador's Texas Shire Houses near Mingus, Texas.
Arrival and departure
- Check-in is at 3 p.m. and checkout is at 11 a.m., per the house listings. Your reservation confirmation and pre-arrival information will have the exact times for your stay.
- Directions come before you arrive. Mirador sends exact directions and arrival details ahead of your stay. Save them offline before you leave town.
- Parking is free for overnight guests. Park only in the designated areas, which are described in your check-in information.
- At checkout, lock the house and return the key to the lockbox.
Coming from Fort Worth? Mirador is about 75 miles west of downtown by way of I-20. Plan on roughly an hour and a half to an hour and 45 minutes, depending on where you start.
Groceries and meals
This is the most important part of planning. Mirador is intentionally tucked away, and grocery stores and dining options are limited nearby, so arrive with groceries, snacks and drinks for your whole stay. The easiest approach is to shop before you leave home or in a larger town along your route.
What's in your kitchenette. Every Texas Shire House has a kitchenette with a stovetop, microwave, air fryer, sink and refrigerator. The Baker and Writer Houses also have ovens. The Gardener House does not have a working oven, so plan stovetop, microwave or air-fryer meals there. The listings also include kitchen utensils, a baking sheet, coffee and a dining table, and the Gardener lists an electric kettle.
Easy meals that work here: breakfast tacos, pasta, a pre-made casserole to reheat (in the Baker or Writer), air-fryer chicken, sandwiches for a day out, and a cheese board for the evening.
A night off from cooking:
- Smokestack Restaurant in Thurber is a local favorite. It's open daily from 7 a.m., until 9 p.m. Sunday–Thursday and 10 p.m. Friday–Saturday.
- White Chicken Chili ($45) and the Texas Snack Basket ($65) are available as add-ons.
Wi-Fi and staying connected
Each house has Starlink Wi-Fi, so you can stay connected when you need to. Mirador's gentle suggestion is to disconnect for a while anyway. Download maps, shows and anything else you'll need before you arrive, just in case.

House rules, in plain language
These come from the house rules on each listing:
- Registered guests only. The Baker sleeps up to five, and the Gardener and Writer up to four.
- No parties, events or unapproved visitors. Weddings, photoshoots and private events need separate approval, so contact Mirador first.
- No pets, except service animals.
- No smoking or vaping indoors. Follow the posted guidelines for smoking and open flames outdoors as well.
- No candles, fireworks or unauthorized open flames.
- Park only in designated areas.
- Report any damage or maintenance concerns promptly.
Add-ons: request them before you arrive
Mirador's Add-ons & Experiences are requested separately after you book. Contact Mirador with your reservation details and what you'd like. They'll follow up to confirm the arrangements and send a payment link. Ask early, especially for hosted experiences.
A few favorites:
- Top Drive Cruise ($250 per group of four): a hosted, 60-minute sunset drive around the property
- Pond Picnic Basket ($100 for two): a blanket, place settings, bottled water and light snacks by the pond
- Fishing Kit ($50): two basic rods, tackle and catch-and-release instructions
- Little Adventures Bundle ($75): three kids' activities, which saves $15 over booking each separately
- Rollaway Bed ($100): with a fitted sheet, blanket and pillow. Occupancy limits still apply.
What to pack
- Groceries, snacks and drinks for every meal you plan to eat in
