Under a living roof

The Gardener House's round green door in a stone arch beneath its grassy roof, with two round windows, flower-filled window boxes, a bench and stepping stones leading to the garden gate

The Gardener is built into the land. Its roof is a living one, a deep blanket of grass that curves over the house and meets the hillside, so from the lane it reads less like a building and more like part of the landscape.

Below the roofline, a stone-and-plaster front frames the round green door in a stone arch. Two round windows sit on either side, each with a window box of flowers, and lanterns hang by the door. A bench and potted flowers make the front yard an easy place to sit with a morning coffee.

Inside, the listing describes a handcrafted hideaway with timber beams, stonework, vintage treasures and whimsical details, plus a fireside living space.

The garden out front

Raised wooden garden beds planted with grasses and leafy greens inside a rustic twig fence in front of the Gardener House, with sandstone boulders behind

The Gardener's listing promises "a private garden," and it's the house's signature. In the exterior photos, the front yard is enclosed by a rustic twig fence with a vine-wrapped gate. Inside it are raised wooden beds with ornamental grasses and leafy plants, a stepping-stone path to the door, and garden tools leaning by the entrance, as if someone just stepped in from weeding.

A few honest notes:

  • Plantings change with the seasons. What's growing in October won't look like a June photo. Think of the garden as the setting for your stay, not a working farm.
  • Ask before you pick. If something looks ready to harvest, check with Mirador first.
  • Bring the garden indoors, kid-style. Mirador's Green Thumbs add-on ($30) lets kids paint and personalize a flower pot, then plant the included seeds to take home. It's listed on the Add-ons & Experiences page.

Who the Gardener suits

Couples. The queen bed, the fireplace and a garden to wander make the Gardener an easy pick for two. Add the Pond Picnic Basket ($100 for two) for a slow lunch by the pond on the property. Our romantic midweek guide has a full two-night plan.

Families of four. Parents take the queen and two kids take the built-in bunks. The Gardener sleeps up to four, so a family of five should look at the Baker House, the one Texas Shire House that sleeps five.

Garden lovers and slow travelers. If your ideal trip involves a bench, a book and not much else, this is your house.

A good fit if you're happy cooking without an oven. The Gardener has a stovetop, microwave and air fryer, but no oven. Skillet breakfasts, air-fryer dinners and anything you can reheat are easy. If baking is part of your plan, the Baker and Writer House both have ovens. For a night off, the White Chicken Chili add-on ($45) arrives as a slow cooker of chili with toppings.

Good to know before you book

  • Bring groceries. Mirador is intentionally tucked away, and dining options nearby are limited. The FAQ recommends arriving with food, snacks and drinks for your stay.
  • House rules. Registered guests only, up to four. No pets (service animals are welcome), no smoking or vaping indoors, and no candles or open flames. If you want a little glow for the evening, pack battery candles.
  • Getting there. Mirador is about 74 miles west of downtown Fort Worth by way of I-20. Plan on about 1 hour 45 minutes, since the last stretch is on slower country roads. Mirador sends exact directions before your stay.
  • Nearby. Palo Pinto Mountains State Park and the W.K. Gordon Museum in Thurber are both close by. See Things to Do Near Mingus, Texas on a Weekday for hours, and our Texas Shire planning guide for a packing list.
