Holiday Week Stays: Thanksgiving and Christmas in a Storybook House

Sunset at Mirador's Texas Shire near Mingus, Texas: a dirt lane leads past sandstone boulders to the Gardener House's round green door, with the Writer House's stone chimney and windmill to the right

Looking for a Christmas getaway in Texas this year, or a Thanksgiving getaway near DFW that isn't another hotel room or another year of hosting? Some families are trading the crowded house for a few quiet days somewhere that already feels like a storybook.

Mirador's Texas Shire Houses are three hobbit-inspired houses built into the hills near Mingus, Texas, about an hour and a half west of Fort Worth. The Baker House sleeps up to five, and the Gardener House and Writer House each sleep up to four.

This guide covers what a holiday week there looks like: when to book, how to cook a Thanksgiving or Christmas meal in a small storybook kitchen, holiday add-ons, what's happening nearby in 2026, and which house fits your group.

Why spend a holiday week in the Texas Shire

A holiday away is less about the big day and more about the days around it. At Mirador that means slow mornings, a walk along the paths between the houses, and evenings in. Each house's booking listing includes heating and a fireplace among its amenities, and every house has Starlink Wi-Fi if someone needs to check in with family back home.

There's no house to clean before guests arrive and no dishes for twenty. You pick who comes, what you eat and how much you do. For a couple, it can be a quiet Christmas for two. For a small family, it can be a Thanksgiving weekend the kids remember because it was different.

Book holiday dates early

Holiday weeks are among the first dates to fill, and Thanksgiving week especially. A few planning basics:

  • Two-night minimum. Every Texas Shire stay is at least two nights, which suits a holiday: arrive the day before, and stay through the day after.
  • Check-in and check-out. The listings show check-in at 3 p.m. and check-out at 11 a.m. If you're arriving on the holiday itself, plan your drive and your meal around that.
  • Be flexible. If your first-choice night is taken, look at the days just before or after the holiday, or the quieter days between Christmas and New Year's.
  • See the full price first. The booking engine shows your total, including fees, before you confirm. Read the payment and cancellation terms on the listing before you book.

Cooking a Thanksgiving or Christmas meal in a kitchenette

A dirt path through wild grass and red sandstone boulders leads to the Gardener House at Mirador at dusk, with the Writer House's windmill beside it

The Baker has a full kitchen. The Gardener and Writer each have a kitchenette with a stovetop, microwave, air fryer, sink and fridge; the Writer also has an oven, and the Gardener has no oven.

That changes the menu more than the meaning of the meal. A few ways to plan it:

  • Keep it cozy-sized. Choose a menu that fits a small kitchen: a smaller roast or a turkey breast instead of a whole bird, plus a couple of easy sides.
  • Cook ahead. Make a dish or two at home, bring it chilled, and reheat it. This is the easiest route in a house without an oven.
  • Use the air fryer. It's handy for roasted vegetables, potatoes and reheating leftovers.
  • Skip the cooking one night. Request the White Chicken Chili from Mirador's Add-ons & Experiences. It's a slow cooker of chili with toppings, a good arrival-night dinner.

Bring groceries. Mirador's FAQ recommends arriving with groceries, snacks and drinks because stores and restaurants are limited nearby. Smokestack Restaurant is a local favorite, but on a holiday, call ahead before counting on any restaurant.

Holiday add-ons for the week

Add-ons aren't included in your stay. To add one, contact Mirador with your reservation details and what you'd like. The team follows up to confirm and sends a payment link. For a holiday stay, ask early. These fit the season well:

  • Cookie Creations. A ready-to-decorate kit with two premade cookies and decorating supplies, a natural holiday activity for kids.
  • For little storytellers. Storybook Studio (an interactive storybook with coloring pages) and Green Thumbs (paint a flower pot and plant seeds), or all three kids' kits in the Little Adventures Bundle.
  • Movie Night. A projector, screen and popcorn for a holiday movie.
  • A toast. The Wine Tasting or Whiskey Tasting for two, ready in the house before you arrive. The Texas Snack Basket covers road-trip snacks.
  • A holiday photo. The Themed Photoshoot is a one-hour session with a professional photographer, and you bring your own outfits and props.
  • One more sunset. The Top Drive Cruise is a hosted, 60-minute sunset drive around the property.

Bringing an extra guest within the house's limit? A Rollaway Bed is also on the add-ons list. See every option and current details on the Add-ons & Experiences page.

Holiday events near Mingus in 2026

Thanksgiving weekend is when the small towns around Mingus light up. These 2026 dates come from the organizers' own pages, so check them again before you go:

  • Granbury Night of Lights Christmas Parade: Friday, Nov. 27, 2026, 6 p.m. Lighted floats and walking groups wind through Historic Granbury Square. Santa's arrival marks the start of the season, and the city's Christmas lights come on in Shanley Park and on City Hall. Details: Visit Granbury parade listing.
  • Merry ChristmasVille in Stephenville: Saturday, Nov. 28, 2026, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Downtown Stephenville fills with lights, holiday shopping, food, family activities and live entertainment, ending with a Lighted Christmas Parade, a tree lighting and fireworks. Details: Stephenville Chamber of Commerce event page.
  • Granbury Candlelight Tour of Homes: Dec. 4-6, 2026. Private historic homes open to the public, with lights, carols, Christmas treats and carriage rides around the Square. It's a good reason for an early-December stay. Details: Christmas in Granbury.

Mapping estimates put downtown Stephenville about 24 miles from the Texas Shire, roughly an hour's drive, and Granbury's courthouse square a little over 50 miles away, about an hour and a half.

Christmas week itself is quieter out here, and that's the point. If you want to get outside, Palo Pinto Mountains State Park is close by. TPWD says the park may reach capacity on weekends and holidays, so reserve a day pass online. Our Palo Pinto Mountains State Park trail guide can help you pick a trail.

Which Texas Shire house fits your holiday?

The Baker House at Mirador at dusk: a stone arch and round yellow door with a rocking chair and potted flowers, behind a wooden picket fence and large sandstone boulders
  • The Baker House (yellow door) sleeps up to five, with a queen bed, bunks and a sleeping nook, plus a full kitchen. It's the pick for a family of five cooking a holiday dinner.
  • The Writer House (blue door) sleeps up to four, with a queen bed, built-in bunks and an oven. It works for a couple's Christmas or a small family.
  • The Gardener House (green door) sleeps up to four, with a queen bed and built-in bunks under a grass-covered roof. With no oven, it's best for a simpler holiday menu or a cook-ahead meal.

Bringing more of the family? Together, the three houses sleep up to 13, so a larger group can book more than one house when the same dates are open in each. Pets aren't allowed (service animals excepted), so plan for the family dog before you go. Still deciding? Compare all three in Baker, Gardener or Writer? How to Choose Your Texas Shire House.

Book your holiday stay

Holiday dates don't stay open long. Check which nights are open at the Baker, Gardener or Writer, and book your two nights (or more) around the day that matters to you. If a holiday week is full, an anniversary getaway near Fort Worth or a romantic midweek escape from Dallas can be the gift instead. Questions about the houses? Start with the FAQ.
