Hobbit-Inspired Thanksgiving: A Cozy Harvest Menu for a Storybook Kitchen

Aerial view of the Baker House at Mirador near Mingus, Texas: a stone-faced, earth-covered storybook home with a round yellow door behind a split-rail fence and boulders

Some Thanksgivings want a crowded dining room. Others want a round door, a fire in the fireplace and a small, generous table in the hills. If you've ever wished the holiday felt a little more like a storybook harvest feast, this one is for you.

Mirador's Texas Shire Houses are three hobbit-inspired houses near Mingus, Texas, about an hour and a half west of Fort Worth. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026, and with a two-night minimum, a Wednesday-to-Friday stay gives you the whole holiday at the Shire. Below is an original, unfussy harvest menu, with notes on what to cook in each house.

Know your kitchen first

The menu depends on which house you book, so start here:

  • The Baker has a full kitchen with a stovetop, oven, microwave, air fryer, sink and refrigerator. It sleeps up to five, which makes it the natural host house for a family Thanksgiving. See The Baker House for a family of five.
  • The Writer is the largest of the three houses and sleeps up to four. Its kitchenette has a stovetop, oven, microwave, air fryer, sink and fridge, so a small roast or a pan of stuffing is within reach.
  • The Gardener sleeps up to four under its living roof. Its kitchenette has a stovetop, microwave, air fryer, sink and fridge, but no oven, so its menu is built around the stovetop and air fryer.

Still deciding? Baker, Gardener or Writer? How to choose your Texas Shire House compares all three.

These ideas suit the Baker's full kitchen and the Writer's kitchenette with an oven. They're simple, original suggestions rather than formal recipes, sized for four to five people:

  • Morning: a slow harvest breakfast. Thick-cut bacon, scrambled eggs with herbs and toast with honey butter. Plenty of tea and coffee. Linger; there's nowhere to be.
  • The centerpiece: a roasted turkey breast or a whole chicken. A whole turkey is a lot for a smaller oven. A bone-in turkey breast or a chicken rubbed with butter, sage and thyme roasts more easily and still feels like a feast.
  • Root vegetables from the "garden." Carrots, parsnips, potatoes and red onion tossed in oil and salt, roasted on one sheet pan.
  • Mushroom and bread stuffing. Sauté mushrooms, onion and celery on the stovetop, fold in cubed bread and broth, and bake until crisp on top. A nod to every hobbit-inspired table.
  • Dessert: a skillet apple crumble. Sliced apples with cinnamon and brown sugar under an oat-and-butter topping, baked until bubbling.

A no-oven harvest menu for the Gardener

The Gardener has no oven, but its stovetop and air fryer can still put a warm, abundant table together for two to four:

  • Air-fryer turkey tenderloins or chicken thighs with sage, garlic and butter. They cook quickly and stay juicy.
  • Air-fryer sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts, cooked in batches and finished with maple and a pinch of salt.
  • Stovetop stuffing with sautéed onion, celery and mushrooms folded into cubed bread and warm broth.
  • Mashed potatoes and gravy, both on the stovetop. Bring a jar of good gravy if you'd rather not make it.
  • Dessert: stovetop cinnamon apples spooned over store-bought pound cake or vanilla ice cream, or a pie picked up on the drive in.

Make it easier with add-ons

If you'd rather cook less, a couple of Mirador's add-ons help:

  • White Chicken Chili ($45): a slow cooker of white chicken chili with toppings. It's an easy dinner for your arrival night, so the big cooking can wait until Thursday.
  • Texas Snack Basket ($65): Texas-made jerky, nuts, popcorn, sweets, sparkling water and more, for grazing while the feast cooks.

Add-ons are requested separately through the Add-ons & Experiences page, and the team confirms them and sends a payment link.

  • Shop before you arrive. The FAQ notes that grocery stores and dining options are limited nearby, and many stores keep holiday hours on Thanksgiving Day. Bring everything on Wednesday.
  • Prep at home. Chop vegetables, cube bread and mix the crumble topping before you leave, and pack them in labeled containers.
  • Mind the timing. The listings show a 3 p.m. check-in and an 11 a.m. checkout, so Wednesday afternoon is for settling in and Thursday is for cooking.
  • Coming as a bigger group? Book two or three houses and cook in the Baker, which has the full kitchen and sleeps five.
