If your job travels with your laptop, the week doesn't have to look the same every time. Swap the home office for a round door and a grassy hillside for a couple of days, do your work, and spend the evenings somewhere that feels a world away from the Metroplex.
Mirador's Texas Shire Houses are three hobbit-inspired houses in the hills near Mingus, Texas, about an hour and a half west of Fort Worth. They weren't built as offices, and we won't pretend otherwise. But with Starlink Wi-Fi in every house, a quiet setting and a two-night minimum that fits neatly into a Tuesday and Wednesday, they can work well for a focused midweek workcation. Here's how to plan one honestly.
Is a Texas Shire workcation right for you?
A workcation here suits focused work: writing, planning, design, reading, coding, catching up on the work that needs a quiet head. It suits a lighter calendar better than a day of back-to-back video calls.
What you can count on. According to Mirador's FAQ, "each house includes Starlink Wi-Fi so you can stay connected when necessary — although disappearing for a little while is highly encouraged." Internet and wireless are listed among the amenities on all three booking listings.
What we can't promise. We don't publish Wi-Fi speeds, and no connection is guaranteed. If a meeting truly can't fail, plan a backup: check your mobile carrier's coverage map for Mingus, Texas, before you go, and bring a hotspot if you have one.
What's not listed. None of the listings mentions a desk, office or monitor. Each one lists a dining table, so plan on working there and pack whatever makes a table comfortable for you.
Which house to work from
All three houses have a queen bed, built-in bunk beds, one bathroom, Starlink Wi-Fi, heating and air conditioning, a fireplace, a dining table and coffee, according to the listings.
- The Writer is the largest of the Texas Shire Houses and sleeps up to four. The queen bed is in a private bedroom and the bunks are in a separate bunk room, so two people who both work can each take a room for calls. Its kitchenette has a stovetop, oven, microwave, air fryer, sink and fridge. For more on this house, see Writer House: A Quiet Retreat for Two or a Writing Escape.
- The Gardener sleeps up to four under a living roof, with a private garden outside. Its kitchenette has a stovetop, microwave, air fryer, sink and fridge, but no oven, and the listing also includes an electric kettle. It's a good fit if you want a garden to step into between tasks and plan to keep meals simple. See The Gardener House: A Hobbit-Inspired Stay Under a Living Roof.
- The Baker is the one to pick if you're bringing the family while you work. It sleeps up to five, with a sleeping nook, and it has a full kitchen.

A workday plan for two nights
The listings show a 3 p.m. check-in and an 11 a.m. checkout (your confirmation will have the exact times), so a two-night stay gives you one full workday at the Shire plus two half days. One way to shape it:
- Day one: work the morning at home. Take your morning meetings from your usual setup, then leave after lunch. Stop for groceries on the way. Mirador is intentionally tucked away, and the FAQ says grocery stores and dining options are limited nearby.
- Day one, 3 p.m.: check in and set up. Unpack, set up at the dining table, connect to the Wi-Fi and make a short test call before you need one. Then do an hour of light work or none at all.
- Day two: your deep-work day. Start early while it's quiet. Put your hardest task first, take a real lunch break outside, and keep your important calls in the window you tested.
- Day three: pack, then drive. Use the morning for email and wrap-up, check out by 11 a.m. and finish the afternoon from home.
If you can take Monday or Friday as well, add a third night so you get two full workdays.
What to pack for a workcation
- Laptop, chargers and a spare cable. Add a power strip if you rely on several devices.
- A laptop stand and an external keyboard, or a cushion, to make the dining table workable for a full day.
- Noise-canceling headphones with a mic for calls.
- A mobile hotspot or a phone plan that allows tethering, as your backup connection.
- Downloaded files. Sync the documents, decks and research you'll need before you leave, in case you want to work offline.
- Groceries for easy meals, plus snacks and drinks for the full stay.
- Something for after work: a book, a deck of cards, walking shoes.

Easy meals between meetings
Keep lunches simple so the workday stays yours. The kitchenettes in the Gardener and Writer, and the Baker's full kitchen, are enough for sandwiches, salads, eggs and air-fryer dinners. Coffee is listed in all three houses.
A few of Mirador's add-ons take cooking off the list entirely:
- White Chicken Chili ($45): a slow cooker of white chicken chili with toppings, for an easy dinner during your stay.
- Texas Snack Basket ($65): Texas-made jerky, nuts, popcorn, sweets, sparkling water and more.
- Pond Picnic Basket ($100 for two): a basket with a blanket, place settings, bottled water and light snacks, for a long lunch by the pond.
Add-ons are requested separately: send your reservation details through the Add-ons & Experiences page, and the team will confirm and send a payment link.
If you'd rather eat out, the FAQ names the Smokestack Restaurant in Thurber, just off I-20 at Exit 367, as a local favorite. Call ahead to check hours.
After you log off
The best part of a workcation is what happens after work. A few ways to spend the evening:
- Take a sunset drive. The Top Drive Cruise ($250 per group of up to four) is a hosted, 60-minute sunset drive around the property. It's listed on the Add-ons & Experiences page.
- Fish the pond. The Fishing Kit ($50 per kit) includes two basic rods, tackle and catch-and-release instructions.
- Hike before or after work. Palo Pinto Mountains State Park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., according to Texas Parks and Wildlife, so an early walk or a late-afternoon hike can fit around your hours. Our Palo Pinto Mountains State Park trail guide lists every trail by difficulty.
- Explore the area. For museums, food and other weekday stops, see Things to Do Near Mingus, Texas on a Weekday.
